In the summer of 2007, the Open Society Institute and OSA

Archivum held an online photography contest under the

Decade of Roma Inclusion 2005–2015. Entitled Chachipe –

meaning “truth” or “reality” in Romanes – the contest was

open to professional and amateur photographers who had

taken photos since the beginning of 2005 in countries participating

in the Decade. The aims of Chachipe were to help

combat visual stereotypes associated with Roma and to

present Roma people and Roma culture sensitively and

artistically. More than 2,000 photos were submitted for

judging, and a jury of professionals selected the winning

entry in each of four categories: news photo, family photo,

portrait photo, and photo essay. Besides the the awardwinning

ones, the exhibition features an encompassing

sample of 70 photographs.
