Knight Foundation Awards $25 Million to Newseum PDF Print E-mail
The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation has announced a $25 million grant to the Newseum in Washington, D.C., to honor the news legacy of the Knight brothers.

In recognition of the largest grant from the news community, the museum will name a conference center and two broadcast studios after the Knights, including one that overlooks the U.S. Capitol. Scheduled to open on April 11, the 250,000-square-foot Newseum blends five centuries of news history with the latest technology and hands-on exhibits that are designed to let visitors experience how and why news is made while reminding them of the importance of the First Amendment, free speech, and the role of the media in a free society.

"The Newseum will immediately become one of the most important platforms for discussion of free speech in America," said Alberto Ibargüen, who is both president of the Knight Foundation and chairman of the Newseum board; he was not part of the committee that developed and negotiated the grant. "We want to be part of that conversation, we want our journalism grantees to be part of that conversation, and we want the values the Knight brothers stood for and defended to be integral to that conversation."

“Knight Foundation Joins Newseum's Founding Partners With a Lead Contribution of $25 Million.” John S. and James L. Knight Foundation Press Release 3/19/08.
